It seems like knockoff and wholesale ones do not last long and there have been reports of them "shocking" the car's computer. Not sure if that is 100% factual but as you said, stick to recognized brands.
I would never go with a knockoff brand just because it is a risk.
I don't mind for less expensive items but I would stick as close to the brand as possible. I am not opposed to buying the brand the car company makes either.
